Mastering Workflows: Scene Extension using Reference Geometry Created in PFTrack
In this video, I'll demonstrate how to generate scene-accurate reference geometry from a solved camera to extend a 3D scene in a 3D package. I will guide you through using metadata in the Clip Input node with Red’s .r3d files to set up your camera and leverage extended metadata for the tracking process. We will go step by step through each node, explaining its function before generating the output. By the end of the video, we will import all the data generated in PFTrack to help build the 3D scene.

Hello @cg.man_aka_kevin! You can download and experiment with all the effects in PFTrack in discovery mode. However, you'll need to subscribe to export your work. 😊
@@ThePixelFarmLtd Ah okay, thank you for the information!
Now I can make post-processing depth of field boleh effect!!!
Absolutely! You should check out our latest video to discover even more possibilities. ruclips.net/video/KlJIWFfBOlc/видео.html
I have been following this tutorial and I'm even using the same footage except for me using metadata/using both in the auto track menu doesn't work. It is grayed out and wont allow me to click it. Any idea why this is happening?
Hey @maxleech7062, It's likely that the metadata isn't linked. PFTrack's metadata system is very flexible, allowing you to select which metadata bits you want to use. When you click 'Parse Metadata', the system looks for any dynamic metadata or data that changes frame by frame. Once it identifies any, you can choose to link it as a Hint or use the exact value. In this case, you need to parse the metadata and then link the rotation data as a hint for it to be available further down the tree. Hope this helps! 🙂
One more Quick question is it possible tracking with rigged geometry is with pftrack....for example rotomation 3d live action charector.....
Hello @begalooloo, You could try the Geo Tracker to track a deformable object; there is also the mocap solver. If you search for both in the documentation, there are some good resources to help ; )
@@ThePixelFarmLtd i can not find it can please share me the link....
@@begalooloo If you add a mocap solver (solver tab) or a geometry track (tracking tab) into your tree and double click on it you will see the node parameters appear at the bottom. To the left of the parameters you will see three icons, Curve Editor, Documentation and Keyboard shortcuts. Click the button (?) and it will take you directly to the relevant part of the documentation. Hope this helps.
@@ThePixelFarmLtd if this solves my problen with 3d rotomation I swear I will purchase the perpetual license...thankyou so much I will check it right away... please do make 3d rotomation or 3d tracking with humanoid rig or animal rig it will really help a lot of people who are struggling with 3d rotomation tracking......
Hi there, I am struggling to extract metadata from exrs originally shot with a Sony Venice2 that has a gyroscopic head. I can see a full range of metadata in PFTrack but nothing highlights after parsing other than the pixel aspect and framerate even though I can see numbers changing for focal pull etc. How can we extract this info in a meaningful way? Thanks heaps for any help you can provide….👍
Hey @RubberWestie I believe someone will be in contact with you regarding this ; )
@@ThePixelFarmLtd Ace👍
@@RubberWestie You should have an email with some info now. If not let us know ; )
Just a reminder that there is no standard method for including "focal length" or "sensor size" in EXR metadata. To do this, you'll need to use the metatags XML file to inform PFTrack which metadata keys to read. You can find detailed instructions in the built-in help tools by searching for "metadata." The documentation page provides examples, and there's a sample file in the installation folder. We're also planning to create a blog post on this topic since we receive similar metadata-related questions.
Hi Pixel Farm Team, Thanks for the fantastic and clear tutorial! The learning section is a huge resource. Question: Can I define the scene scale in PFTrack to aid the layout artist? I understand the scene export node allows scaling, but how do I determine the correct value? Example: Let's say I have two tracked points in the scene, and I know the real-world distance between them. Can I set this distance in PFTrack? This would be incredibly helpful for placing the exported camera in a correctly scaled and dimensioned 3D scene. Thanks in advance!
Hey @TUSHARMEDIA, glad to hear the videos are helping! You can definitely set the scale. We briefly cover this in some of our other videos, so it might be worth checking those out. To set the scale, you'll need to use the Orient Camera node. You have two options for scaling: either use the distance of a single tracker from the camera by selecting one and entering the distance (lower right), or select any two trackers and set the distance between them. Hope this helps ; )

@@ThePixelFarmLtd Thank you very much Adam, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the link to the video as well. Keep up the great work.
Awesome video, would've loved to see how you stuck those trackers to the proxy geometry :D
Hey @jonaseriksson2367, we have a video that you might find handy which covers this ruclips.net/video/nD8d5RzE_Zc/видео.html hope this helps ; )
@@ThePixelFarmLtd alright I think I get it :). I was doing a shot where I was tracking a car driving. Had a good camera solve but the car wouldn’t stick. I had the model so i tried geometry track and user track points as helpers but it still wouldn’t stick right. Gonna try with user tracks, object solve and import the model in to the test geometry node and see if I can get it to stick then. I saw a cool video from you guys with photogrametry and user tracks. You put certain points from the user tracks and placed them in the area on the generated photogrametry mesh to stick it into place. Any way of doing that with a 3d model? :)
@jonaseriksson2367 Tracking cars can be challenging because reflections often interfere with automated tracking. I suggest trying supervised tracking (User Tracks). These trackers can be used for an object solve or as helper trackers in the Geometry Track. Regarding the geometry in the survey solver, theoretically, you could use something like a Make Object node, but it might require some experimentation. I recommend sticking to the usual method of using the Object Solver or Geo Track first.
@@ThePixelFarmLtdwill do thanks for the tips:)
Amazing! Love how the new PFtrack features are sooo awesome! ✨
Thanks @kspmn : )
Its great, but the thing is most of the time you dont have any metadata or supported cameras, most people use dji drones with their built-in cameras and that makes matchmoving hundred times harder. But I love Pftrack, tbh most intuitive and professional software comparing to many others.
Thanks for your feedback. We are glad you are enjoying PFTrack. Many professionals use @dji products successfully with PFTrack, but if we could get some test footage, it would be great to add support for their metadata.
Whats the difference between an auto track and an auto match node?
Hey @TheMrLeoniasty, the new Auto Track node in the latest version replaces and improves upon the feature matching technology from Auto Match, while incorporating the best aspects of the previous Auto Track. Click on the question mark (?) button in the node panel to access the relevant documentation, which offers great information on how it works. Hope this helps! :)
@@ThePixelFarmLtd thank you! I tried reading the documentation but the website didn't work for me thats why I commented here since I saw the "auto match" node being used instead of the "auto track"
@@ThePixelFarmLtd I see that now I'm unable to disable auto tracks from a specific frame looking forward/backward. Also when selecting a track I dont see a preview of a zoomed in feature that it is tracking. Is there a way to bring back these things? Using the new "auto track node" feels like I lost a bit of control that I had before.
@@TheMrLeoniasty It works differently from the older Auto Track, which is why you aren't seeing the same options / controls. Image Proxy: This was previously used to primarily increase tracking speed, but you should find the new node is a lot faster. If you need to pick features at a smaller resolution you can use the new Feature Scale parameter. Deformation: The feature windows will deform automatically during sub-pixel refinement. You can keep a running measure of this deformation by setting the Feature Template option to Adaptive. Consistency: This is now controlled by the Motion Prediction parameter. It can use either image motion or metadata hints to help. Back-track and spread: This is no longer needed as the new filtering algorithm will automatically pick the longest available trackers to cover your image area as best as it can. Blur, Illumination: The new feature matching algorithm uses an illumination independent image descriptor so you shouldn't need to pre-blur the frame or tell it to account for any brightness variations. You can disable trackers if you need to or you can add a User Track node beneath the Auto Track node and use 'Fetch' to pull any trackers you want to adjust from the Auto Track. This will give you the control to extend, add, or adjust anything you need. Hope this helps ;)
@@ThePixelFarmLtd Thank you! the fetch option is what I was looking for
Hi. I've just downloaded this software. The Auto Match node is not in the tracking tab. Has this moved or changed? Thanks.
Hello @roymedhurst, we've recently integrated the best features of Auto Match into the updated Auto Track. This new version offers significant performance improvements over the previous Auto Match.
Are you able to do things like this in Maya?
You can export Maya compatible files from PFTrack ; ) but you aren't able to solve cameras and generate geometry the way you can in PFTrack.

simple mind blowing ...really enjoying your tutorial 1 quick question how many image you need to built the geo
Hey @begalooloo, not as many as you would think. In this clip you can build pretty good geometry from 20 or so images. The great thing about the workflow is you can duplicate the node and experiment with more or less images ; )
@@ThePixelFarmLtd am going to download the software and give it a try ... It exactly matched the image to GEo that was really impressive ...the texture and geo projection was perfect.....
@@begalooloo The .usdc file is available in the download link provided in the description. You can load it directly into any 3D application that supports it, and the camera, trackers, point clouds, geometry, and textures will all be in place.

how come when I try to track footage in 59.94 it doesn't export out the composition in 59.94 but in 25 or 30 fps instead? Essentially, how can I change the frame rate of the exported to comp to match that of the inputted clip. Thanks
Hello @Vivavisuals3D you can set the frame rate of your clip in the Clip Input node.
@@ThePixelFarmLtd hey thanks for the response! Actually everything was inputted correctly but was still exporting the comps in the wrong FPS. The solution for this ended up being me having to open the .ma file in text edit and manually inputting the frame rate and/or res and it worked.
Great
best <3
Thanks : )
Can I do this in the free version?
Hi @Abreu3dfx, if you're not subscribed, you can use the software in discovery mode. This lets you explore all the effects and get a feel for how PFTrack functions. When you're ready, subscribing enables you to export any data for use in other applications. I'll update the links in the description so you can download the .ma file and the undistorted plate to try out in After Effects yourself.
Thanks a lot! How do i translate the object at the Object solver node? I look at the Orientation mode and didnt see that option
Ah do you mean the cow head on the forklift? To achieve this, simply follow these steps: Within the 'interaction mode' of the 'Test Object' node, initially 'place the object on selected feature', such as one of the solved points on the forklift. Then, switch the 'interaction mode' to 'Translate', allowing you to adjust its position as needed from there. Before you do this make sure you have set the correct 'Distance from Camera' in the 'Object Solver', I used the virtual ground plane and the two tracked markers on the ground to help set mine. Hope this helps.
@@ThePixelFarmLtd Thanks!!
I tried 3D CAMERA TRACKING at after effects, cinema 4d and syntheyes. this is the best camera tracking tool for me. very organized, great features, affordable monthly subscription price. also allowed very fast and accurate result to difficult shot.
Thanks @yinon_tal : )
What are the reccomend export formay and scene scale? I tried FBX 2020 and scene scale 500 and it matched well but i would like to know form the Pro one.
Technically the scene scale should stay at 1.000, I'd locate an object in your scene that you can measure accurately, such as two tracked points, and then set the distance between them in meters. For example you could include two user tracks-one positioned at the bottom of a doorway and another at the top-and establish the height between them. By doing so, when you introduce a 3D model of a human (made at real-world scale) into your scene, it will align perfectly with the doorway's correct height.

Seems very stable tracking software! Thanks for the update introduction
it exports only 20 framres (project is 500 frames)
The set of photogrammetry stills is 20 frames correct. It depends on what you have chosen to export.
could you please make tutorials about filmback data especially shooted with iphone or crop factored cameras
@Murathanaksoz Sounds like an interesting idea and we will certainly look into producing a video on the subject. FYI there is a lot of information on core camera technicalities and their effect in matchmoving here www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/pftrack-articles/ . Be careful using phone cameras such as the iPhone for vfx work they have a lot of hidden processing that will effect your ability to track.
@@ThePixelFarmLtd But please, i also want to request you to make a video on how to work with cropped sensor cameras. While learning this, I shot a video with my 80d cropped sensor. So we have to put focal length, and I was confused that if I should put 18mm there or 28.8 mm for the focal length, but the video I shot was too fast and had too much motion blur I had to discard that. So, if you tell that we have to put the cropped focal length or we should multiply with it's crop factor and then put it ! Thanks
Hey @@none53, we certainly will be covering the calibration steps in a future video : ) If you put 22.5mm into the horizontal axis for the sensor size, PFTrack will automatically calculate the vertical size. If you shot with an 18mm lens, you should put in 18mm, not the full-frame equivalent focal length. I hope this helps.
